Sometimes when I turn on the
machine, the screen has lost its contrast and is all washed out. I
adjust it in the SET screen and it's fine for a while, but then I have
to adjust it again. Is there something wrong with my machine?
The contrast of a liquid crystal display (LCD) changes with
temperature. When you turn the machine on from a "cold" state,
software in the machine adjusts the contrast every 5 minutes to
compensate for the temperature. After 1 hour, when it has reached full
operating temperature, the compensation stops.
This plan works very
well, as long as the screen is cold when you turn the machine
on. However, if you turn the machine off, then back on a short time
later, the screen is already near operating temperature. The built-in
compensation software does not know this, and changes the contrast
unnecessarily. If you then correct it, when the compensation turns off
the contrast will again be off.
To avoid this problem, don't turn
the machine off until you are sure you won't be using it for at least
a hour. The Eco Mode of the machine will reduce power
consumption to no more than what a night light uses. If, by chance,
you do happen to turn the machine on while the display is still warm,
resist the temptation to adjust the contrast. Within 10-15 minutes the
compensation will usually reduce to a level that permits acceptable
viewing. Conversely, when setting the contrast initially, don't make
any changes until the machine has been on for at least an hour.
